OK, here’s where we get serious. Hobnail requires that all trekkers purchase travel/medical insurance that covers them properly for all trekking activities.
There are a lot more details you need to know about travel insurance than we want to put in this limited space — including stuff about trip cancellations and what company we recommend — so when you’re ready, pop over to our Travel Insurance page.
We rate this trek as “intermediate to challenging” in difficulty.
For a trek classified as “intermediate”, you should expect 3-7 hours of hiking
We consider our treks to be adventures, not vacations. We’re not Hobnail Vacation Company, after all! Don’t get us wrong; we like vacations as much as the next person, but with our treks, you need to be physically and mentally ready. Here’s what we ask of you:
- You thoroughly read all the information we send you prior to departure.
- You get yourself an accountability partner and train properly. This doesn’t mean doing a few squats two weeks before departure.
- You familiarize yourself with your gear prior to leaving. Practice adjusting your backpack, filtering water if necessary, etc.
- If you purchase new boots, they are broken in well in advance of departure.
- When on trek, you FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF YOUR GUIDE. His or her only concern is helping you achieve your goal safely and in good health, but this won’t happen unless you follow their advice. This includes – but is not limited to – food recommendations, speed of pace, when to sleep and when not to, when to walk and when to rest, when to turn around due to illness, etc.
- When on trek, you treat your guide and the locals you encounter with the utmost respect. We are guests in their country and very grateful to be there.
All of these things may seem like common sense — and they are — but we feel that we must mention them. Hobnail’s goal is to provide you with the best experience possible, and you have an important role in achieving that goal.
A few days after registering for a trek (with a deposit of at least $900), we’ll give you a quick call to say hello and answer any initial questions you may have. If you use WhatsApp, we’ll add you to a group with your fellow trekkers so that you may interact with them, and possibly your guide, before departure. You’ll be able to post questions in the group anytime you’d like, talk about the cool gear you’re planning to take with you, organize group hikes if you live near each other, and generally just get to know those who will be sharing this incredible experience with you.
Within the first weeks after your trek is confirmed, you will receive a Welcome Kit from us. It contains stuff that you can use during training as well as on the trek itself, and some other just fun things to get you (even more) excited about your trip.
You’ll also receive a login to our Hobnail app, which is full of great information including a day-by-day schedule, nearby points of interest, beautiful photography, and yet another way to contact us – through its messaging service. As your trip gets closer, we will load your flights and other more specific information into the app so you’ll feel even more secure in knowing where you’ll be staying and even how to get around the airports you’ll travel through.
The closer you get to your trek, the more you’ll hear from us — but of course, you can reach out any time you have a question.
What happens if my trek is not confirmed?
If the minimum number for the trek you booked is not reached before the 60-day booking deadline, you will be eligible for either a refund or to transfer your deposit to another trek. See details HERE.
Our Mobile App
When you book, we send you the login credentials to your own, customized app. By departure, your app will contain your flight info, passport, travel insurance docs, and COVID info, as well as your full itinerary, points of interest, and other amazing stuff.
TREK ITINERARY
DAY 1: Welcome to Peru!
Once you exit the airport in Lima, look for the HOBNAIL sign. You’ll be escorted across the street, within the airport complex, to your hotel, where you will be welcomed with a pisco sour, the traditional cocktail of Peru.
Spend the night relaxing and recovering from the long flights.
Meals Included: None
Accommodations: Wyndham Costa del Sol Airport Hotel
DAY 2: Journey to Cusco
This morning you’ll hop on a short flight to Cusco. We will have checked in for you already, and your tickets will be waiting at the hotel front desk for you to pick up on your way out. About an hour and a half before your flight, head back across the street to the airport and get settled at the gate until it’s time to board.
Upon arriving in Cusco, grab your bags and head directly outside the airport. Look for the HOBNAIL sign; the staff will collect you and take you to your hotel in Cusco to relax and enjoy some lunch (on your own). Feel free to ask them for recommendations, but you can’t go wrong with all of the great options available here.
You’ll have the day here in Cusco free to roam around the city at your leisure. This time is important as your body acclimatizes to the altitude so that the next few days of hiking will be much easier. Try not to over-exert yourself today; you’ll have plenty of time for that later.
This evening you’ll meet in the hotel lobby before heading out for your welcome dinner at 6:30 pm.
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel, Welcome Dinner
Accommodations: Rumi Punku
DAY 3: Cusco city tour
Feel free to sleep in this morning and continue your exploration of the city at your own pace. At 1 pm, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby to begin a tour of the city center and outside Inca ruins. You will head first to Cusco’s Plaza de Armas to visit the city’s most famous cathedral before continuing by foot to Q’oricancha, the Temple of the Sun. Make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes as you’ll be doing a lot of city walking today.
Next, you will hop on a bus that will take you to the city limits, about a 25-minute drive, to visit four important Inca sites: Sacsayhuaman, Q’enqo, Puca Pucara, and your final stop, Tambomachay. You’ll then take the bus back to Cusco and will be dropped off at the hotel around 6 pm.
You will have about 30 minutes to head back to your room and wash up before meeting again in the lobby at 6:30 for your trek briefing.
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel
Accommodations: Rumi Punku
DAY 4: Sacred Valley and Glass Cabanas
Time to get out of the city and hit the trail! After breakfast at the hotel, your guides will meet you in the lobby at 8:00 am to head straight out to the valley. Don’t forget to wear your comfortable shoes again today as this is a full-day tour. All of your entrance tickets are included.
The Sacred Valley was one of the main areas settled by the Incas, and you will see vast contour terracing and irrigation channels they left behind. You’ll also notice an unusual abundance of fertile plains in this high area of the Andes.
Your first major stop will be at the ruins of Pisac, where you will see amazing works of stone art and impressive agricultural terraces like those mentioned above. After exploring for a bit, you will head to the bustling handicraft market of Pisac. This market is the real deal and easy to get lost in while discovering all of the treasures available for purchase. Once you’re done shopping, meet back up with your group and enjoy a picnic lunch.
After lunch, you will be transported along the Urubamba River to the town of Ollantaytambo to visit the ruins there; this is an important area of construction built during the Inca’s most prolific era. Marvel at the incredible rock formations representing the Inca god, Wiracocha.
When the tour is over, you will head to your campsite located at the trailhead for the Salkantay trek. This campsite is entirely unique due to the glass cabanas where you’ll spend the night under the Andean sky. When you arrive, you will be welcomed by our reception team and ushered to your cabanas. The team will unpack and bring you your things as you take a walk around and enjoy the amazing views.
Our glass cabanas are completely eco-friendly. The glass in the roof absorbs the heat of the sun during the day and maintains the heat for up to 6 hours with a comfortable room temperature of 63 degrees F. You will have plenty of time to continue acclimatizing to the altitude of 12,467 feet and dream of the magnificent trek upon which you are about to embark.
You’ll want to stay up and stare at the stars all night but try to get some sleep because tomorrow will be a long, challenging – but also exciting – day.
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel, picnic lunch, dinner
Accommodations: Glass Cabanas
DAY 5: Begin Salkantay Trek, Humantay Lagoon
You will be awakened this morning at 5:00 am to a hot cup of coca tea served to you in your bed. The sun rises early this close to the equator, and you want to be the first to arrive at Humantay Lake in all its turquoise splendor. The color is attributed to the pure minerals from the mountain and the natural thaw of the snow.
You will leave the glass cabanas at 5:30 am to make the 90-minute hike up to Humantay Lake. You will spend around two hours there, exploring, taking photos, and just trying to take in all of the magnificent scenery. Afterward, hike back down Humantay Mountain and continue for about 3 hours before stopping for lunch.
Enjoy lunch and some time to rest before continuing on the trail towards the mountain pass, which is the highest point of the entire trek. It will take about an hour, and you won’t spend more than 30 minutes at the pass. (Limiting the time spent at that altitude will help avoid any altitude-related headaches.) Heading back down the mountain, you’ll hike for another two hours or so before reaching tonight’s campsite.
When you arrive at Wayracmachay campsite, you will be given an insulated hot water pillow to place on your body, wherever you like, to take the chill off.
Elevation Gained: 2,788 ft.
Elevation Descended: 2,788 ft.
Weather: Usually cold and windy with rain possible; keep your poncho and backpack cover handy
Hiking Distance: 11.5 miles
Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at camp
Accommodations: Tents at Wayracmachay campsite (12,467 ft)
Day 6: Wayracmachay to the Hobbit Houses at Loreta Campsite
The morning begins with hot coca tea delivered to your tent by a smiling staff member. You’ll enjoy an amazing, freshly-cooked breakfast and start the trek around 6 am.
It will be a great day, beginning with 2 hours of downhill hiking to Rayampata, where you will cross the bridge from the Rayampata side to the Unuyuc side of the mountain. Then you’ll have about an hour of uphill hiking before reaching Unuyuc, where there are amazing views of the Santa Teresa Valley. Your guide will give you an explanation of everything that you are seeing and why it is all so important.
Continue for 2.5 hours on a steep downhill to Wiñaypocco for lunch. Whew! Now it’s only about 90 minutes before reaching the Hobbit Houses along the road. Yep, that’s right — Hobbit Houses! Time to channel your inner Bilbo Baggins!
If you brought your bathing suit and the weather cooperates, you can soothe those aching muscles while relaxing in the outdoor jacuzzi at this camp.
You will welcome the change in temperature today as it’ll be much warmer than it was yesterday.
Elevation Descended: 4,593 ft.
Weather: Warm to hot
Hiking Distance: 11.5 miles
Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at camp
Accommodations: Hobbit Houses at Loreta campsite (7,874 ft)
DAY 7: Loreta to Llactapata
After a hot breakfast, you will get started on this shorter day through lush tropical rainforests and a couple of remote coffee farms and avocado plantations. At one of the coffee farms, you’ll spend the morning learning to harvest, dry roast, and grind your own amazing cup of java – right from the field to your steaming hot mug!
Continuing on to the Llactapata Inca site, you will hike for about three hours with the incredible views of the Santa Teresa Valley as a constant companion. At Llactapata, you will get the first glance of Machu Picchu in the distance.
Tonight will be your last night of camping and enjoying the incredible dishes created by your trekking chef. It will also be special due to the location of this campsite and its most amazing views — including, of course, Machu Picchu — in the distance. It will truly be an experience that you won’t soon forget. (It’s also a great time to tip your chefs and other trekking staff – we provide some guidance on this, don’t worry.)
It can get pretty darn chilly at night, but you’ll be cozy in your warm sleeping bag.
Elevation Gained: 1,312 ft.
Weather: Hot and humid during the day, chilly at night
Hiking Distance: 7.5 miles
Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at camp
Accommodations: Tents at Llactapata campsite (8,858 ft), overlooking Machu Picchu
DAY 8: Llactapata to Aguas Calientes
With a little luck, the skies will be clear when you awake and you can enjoy those beautiful views one more time. After the last breakfast prepared by the trekking chef, you will head out for a two-hour descent all the way to the river, then another hour before finally reaching the hydroelectric station where you will enjoy lunch.
After your tummy is full, you will continue along the railroad route with fantastic views of the tropical forest and banana plantations where locals farm fruits and vegetables. Around three hours later, you will enter Aguas Calientes (“hot water” in English), the little town below Machu Picchu at 6,562 ft. Head directly to your hotel and enjoy a hot shower in your room if you want. Or take a dip in the public hot springs. (Heads up: these springs cost about 10 soles to enter and can be crowded.) Or, if you’d prefer, just spend the afternoon relaxing after a job well done on the first (and most difficult) part of the trek.
Dinner will be in a restaurant in town. Don’t eat and drink too much; there is another adventure waiting.
Weather: Hot
Hiking Distance: 8.75 miles
Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodations: La Cabana Hotel
DAY 9: Begin the Inca Trail
Lace-up those boots again, because today’s trek is full – and extraordinary. You will first head to the train station in Aguas Calientes to make the 15-minute trip to KM 104. It is here that you begin the hike along the famous Inca Trail.
You will hike for three hours gradually uphill to the most beautiful Incan site on the Inca Trail: Wiñay Wayna (which translates in English to “forever young”) at 8,500 ft. Few people get the opportunity to see these elaborate water fountains, temples, and agricultural terraces. They provide a perfect opportunity to learn about the history of the Incas. The backdrop of this site is a dramatic cliff drop with beautiful mountains surrounding the area.
Hike a few minutes from there and you’ll arrive at the Hobnail/Alpaca Expeditions campsite used by hikers who are doing the 4-day Classic Inca Trail hike. It is here you will enjoy a hot lunch and refill your water bottles before heading back out to the Sun Gate to see Machu Picchu for the first time. After taking in these once-in-a-lifetime views, you’ll begin a descent into Machu Picchu.
This will be a teaser, of sorts. Today you will be moving through Machu Picchu on your way down to Aguas Calientes, so you won’t be exploring the citadel or spending a lot of time there. However, the site should be largely empty of tourists by then and will be great for some quick photos and a look around.
You will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and head to your hotel to freshen up for dinner at Indio Feliz (included). This restaurant is considered the best in town. After dinner, we recommend going to bed early – tomorrow morning will be here before you know it!
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel, lunch, and dinner
Accommodations: La Cabana Hotel
DAY 10: Machu Picchu Day!
Today, you’ll finally get a close-up and personal look at the Lost City of Machu Picchu! As promised when we recommended you go to bed early, you’ll wake up early (5 am!) to catch one of the first buses. (You want to be at the site early so that you can catch the sunrise.) Upon arriving at the ruins, your guide will spend about two hours showing you through, explaining the highlights and the history of the site.
At around 10 am, your guide will lead you to the entrance to Huaynapiccu. This hike heads up the mountain — about 45 minutes to the top — and offers an amazing, birds-eye view of the ruins. (Your entrance fee for this space-limited optional climb is included.) You definitely don’t want to pass this up!
Your Machu Picchu tour complete, you’ll jump on a train from the ruins back to Aguas Calientes where you will enjoy your last meal with your trekking guide. Now is a great time to tip him/her for a job well done (no worries, we’ll provide guidance on this).
You will take the 3:30 (upgraded) Vistadome train to either Ollantaytambo or Poroy. From there, the staff will transport you back to your hotel in Cusco by Alpaca bus, another 30-minute trip. Time to collapse in bed — after a much-needed shower, of course — and get a good night’s sleep!
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel, lunch
Accommodations: Rumi Punku
DAY 11: Free day in Cusco
After an amazing hike over several days, everyone needs a day off to relax and recoup. Sleep in and enjoy the day in Cusco before tomorrow’s really cool hike.
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel
Accommodations: Rumi Punku
DAY 12: Hike to the Spectacular Rainbow Mountain
Hopefully, you will be raring to go after a long hot shower and a good night’s sleep. It’s another early wake-up and pick-up (4:30 this time!) from the hotel. You will head directly to the trailhead for a nice breakfast before starting today’s hike.
Be sure you’ve dressed appropriately in a warm jacket, scarf, beanie, and gloves because you’ll be gaining altitude for two hours straight as you climb to the Rainbow Mountain range. The hike up includes some short breaks where the guide will share important information about the mountains and geography of the area. The trail itself is wide and can be dusty in the dry season but slippery in the rainy season. You’ll be just fine, however, with your waterproof hiking boots and trekking poles.
When you reach the top of Rainbow Mountain – around 9:30 am – you will have an hour to take in the spectacular views of the surrounding area – valleys, other mountains, and a breathtaking view of the highest glacial mountain in Cusco, Ausangate. Its peak, at 20,944 feet, also qualifies it as one of the tallest mountains in Peru.
You’ll have plenty of time to take treasured photographs before your guide provides you with some intriguing facts about this amazing place that truly feels like another planet. How in the world did this mountain get all of these colors?! You’ll find out at this point in your journey.
Take your last few photos of this spectacular mountain before beginning the descent. Hobnail does this a little differently than other groups. Instead of taking the same route as everyone else, you’ll hike to a lookout point to see the Red Valley below. This valley is the icing on the cake, and many trekkers say that it’s even more stunning than Rainbow Mountain! Let us know what you think.
From the lookout point, it’s about 2.5 hours, mostly downhill, to the end of the trail near where you started the hike. Here you’ll enjoy a fresh meal prepared by our chef, including cold drinks, appetizers, soup, and a main course. Dig in!
After lunch, you’ll be transported about 2.5 hours to Cusco, where you’ll be dropped off at the hotel at around 5:30 pm.
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel, lunch
Accommodation: Rumi Punku
DAY 13: Journey to Puno
After an early breakfast this morning, you’ll be picked up from the hotel at around 6:15 am and transferred to a bus station where you’ll board the tourist bus to Puno. This is a full-day ride, stopping at four Inca sites along the way: Temple of Andahuaylillas (or Sistine Chapel of America), the Inca temple of Raqchi, the pass of the Raya at 14,222 feet, and the Inca Aymara museum of Pukara. Lunch will be provided along the way.
Upon arriving in Puno, you will be transferred to your hotel for a good night’s sleep.
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel, boxed lunch
Accommodations: Tierra Viva Puno
DAY 14: Lake Titicaca
Today, you trade the high mountains for the massive Lake Titicaca!
Pick-up will be between 7:30 and 8 am, at which point you will be transferred to the port to board a boat that will take you to the floating islands of Uros.
There will be time to enjoy this unusual place before heading to the next island, Amantani, where you will be paired with a local family and have the honor of spending the night in their home. Your accommodation tonight will be basic, but memorable, as you are surrounded by a wonderful, welcoming family.
Your group will be split up between local families, but we will keep you together with your traveling companions as much as possible.
This experience will provide an authentic opportunity to see how the indigenous people of the lake live. In late afternoon, you will climb the mountain to watch the sunset and then enjoy a dance party with the locals.
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel, lunch, and dinner
Accommodations: Local family on Amantani
DAY 15: Lake Tour and Journey to Lima
Boooooo, it’s almost over. 🙁
The morning will begin with an early breakfast with your host family before heading back to the boat that will carry you to Taquile Island. This island is a great place to learn about the agriculture and textile craftsmanship of the local residents, and there will be plenty of chances to purchase homemade goods here if so you choose.
The boat will head back to the port around 4:30 pm. From there, your Hobnail staff member will transport you to the Juliaca airport — around 45 minutes away — before saying goodbye. You will fly back to Lima and be transferred to the hotel in the Miraflores area of Lima. This area is right on the Pacific Ocean and has beautiful places to visit and walk, as well as amazing restaurants to check out.
Speaking of that, this will be a perfect night to try out one of the culinary wonders in this capital city, which is becoming renowned for its many “foodie-approved” restaurants.
Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch
Accommodations: Casa Andina Premium Miraflores
DAY 16: Lima Bicycle Tour
What a great way to top off this adventure! A bicycle tour is one of the coolest ways to experience the most touristic districts of Lima. Enjoy the beautiful landscapes throughout Lima’s bay, including an outstanding view of the Peruvian Sea and islands. The colorful districts of Miraflores and Barranco are worth the price of admission! (There is none, but you know what we mean.) By the end of the day, you won’t believe that you biked 10 miles. (For non-bikers, this can be done as a walking tour as well).
Your tour will end around 2 pm, after which you can enjoy lunch and a relaxing afternoon/evening on your own. Feel free to organize a last-night get-together with your fellow trekkers!
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel
Accommodations: Casa Andina Premium Miraflores
DAY 17: Departure
We hate to see you go!
Around four hours before your international flight, we will begin the process of transferring you to the airport and saying our goodbyes.
Safe travels and come visit again soon!
Meals Included: Breakfast at Hotel
GENERAL INFORMATION
About Peru
About the lodging
Once on trek, your lodging will be a combination of tent camping, one night each in Alpaca Expedition’s glass cabanas and Hobbit houses (pictured here), and comfortable hotels. Tents are built for four people, but will only house a maximum of two, so there is plenty of room. Per our arrangement with Alpaca, Hobnail trekkers will be provided with a 3″ air mattress, along with a small pillow. Each campsite also has a clean, portable toilet tent that is removed after each group leaves to lessen the footprint on the landscape.
About the food
There is nothing comparable to what the Alpaca Expeditions chefs do on the mountainside. They will prepare amazing meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, often starting with a nutritious soup and mostly serving family style. There will always be a protein, salad, assorted sides, and even mouth-watering desserts. They will cater to all food restrictions and make sure everyone has enough to make it up the mountain. Please make sure to let us know about any food restrictions when you book your trek.
