which itinerary is
right for you?

Each of these journeys leads to Machu Picchu and shares Hobnail’s small-group, high-touch approach. The difference is the experience along the way — history, wilderness, or cultural immersion.

LARES TREK

Lares offers a gentler, more intimate window into Andean life. You’ll pass through remote villages, soak in natural hot springs, and experience a slower, more reflective rhythm. All this, but also with the magic of entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate — without the intensity or crowds of the full Classic Trail.

Feels like: connection — to people, place, and tradition. If you’re into culture, quiet trails, and a balanced, easier trek, this is the one for you.

CLASSIC INCA TRAIL

This is the trek for travelers who are deeply drawn to history and symbolism. Walking the same stone paths the Incas once used, passing ruins along the way, and entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate feels ceremonial and deeply meaningful. It’s structured, iconic, and emotionally powerful — a bucket-list experience done with Hobnail’s careful pacing and personal support.

Feels like: a pilgrimage through history. Pick this if history and archaeology excite you.

SALKANTAY

Salkantay is about scale and space. Towering peaks, glaciers, and wide-open landscapes define the experience. The trail is quieter and more rugged, offering a sense of wilderness and solitude that appeals to travelers who want to feel immersed in nature. It’s visually stunning and emotionally expansive, with Machu Picchu as the grand finale.

Feels like: stepping into the high Andes in their rawest form. Pick this if you’re energized by big mountains and wilderness.

OK, here’s where we get serious. Hobnail requires that all trekkers purchase travel/medical insurance that covers them properly for all trekking activities.

There are a lot more details you need to know about travel insurance than we want to put in this limited space — including stuff about trip cancellations and what company we recommend — so when you’re ready, pop over to our Travel Insurance page.

We rate this trek as “intermediate to challenging” in difficulty.

For a trek classified as “intermediate”, you should expect 3-7 hours of hiking and/or 2,460 to 4,100 feet of positive altitude difference and 2,460 to 4,920 feet of negative altitude difference on a typical day. There may be some technically demanding portions of the route, alternating paths and trails, and drastic temperature changes.

We consider our treks to be adventures, not vacations. We’re not Hobnail Vacation Company, after all! Don’t get us wrong; we like vacations as much as the next person, but with our treks, you need to be physically and mentally ready. Here’s what we ask of you:

  • You thoroughly read all the information we send you prior to departure.
  • You get yourself an accountability partner and train properly. This doesn’t mean doing a few squats two weeks before departure.
  • You familiarize yourself with your gear prior to leaving. Practice adjusting your backpack, filtering water if necessary, etc.
  • If you purchase new boots, they are broken in well in advance of departure.
  • When on trek, you FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF YOUR GUIDE. His or her only concern is helping you achieve your goal safely and in good health, but this won’t happen unless you follow their advice. This includes – but is not limited to – food recommendations, speed of pace, when to sleep and when not to, when to walk and when to rest, when to turn around due to illness, etc.
  • When on trek, you treat your guide and the locals you encounter with the utmost respect. We are guests in their country and very grateful to be there.

All of these things may seem like common sense — and they are — but we feel that we must mention them. Hobnail’s goal is to provide you with the best experience possible, and you have an important role in achieving that goal.

A few days after registering for a trek, we’ll give you a quick call to say hello and answer any initial questions you may have. If you use WhatsApp, we’ll add you to a group with your fellow trekkers so that you may interact with them, and possibly your guide, before departure. You’ll be able to post questions in the group anytime you’d like, talk about the cool gear you’re planning to take with you, organize group hikes if you live near each other, and generally just get to know those who will be sharing this incredible experience with you.

Within the first weeks after your trek is confirmed, you will receive a Welcome Kit from us. It contains stuff that you can use during training as well as on the trek itself, and some other just fun things to get you (even more) excited about your trip.

You’ll also receive a link to your personalized Hobnail app, which is full of great information, including a day-by-day schedule, packing lists, helpful links and other information, and yet another way to contact us – through its messaging service. As your trip gets closer, we will load your flights and other more specific information into the app so you’ll feel even more secure in knowing where you’ll be staying and even how to get around the airports you’ll travel through.

The closer you get to your trek, the more you’ll hear from us — but of course, you can reach out any time you have a question.

Who typically joins a Hobnail trek?

Hobnail travelers tend to be adults — often 50+ — who want an authentic, meaningful, small group experience without having to worry about any planning or logistics. Some are first-time international travelers; others are seasoned travellers but value small groups and personal attention and support.

How difficult are these Peruvian Odyssey Treks?

The difficulty level ranges between the three, but they’d all be considered moderate to challenging, primarily due to altitude rather than technical difficulty. You’ll be walking several hours per day at a steady, manageable pace. No climbing or technical skills are required. Hobnail itineraries are designed with rest breaks, gradual acclimatization, and flexibility to support a wide range of hikers. The more training you do, the better your trek will be.

Do I need prior trekking experience?

No prior trekking experience is required. What IS required is a reasonable level of fitness, comfort in walking for several hours a day, a willingness to train, and a positive attitude. Many Hobnailers are not “trekkers” by identity, but they are curious, active people who want a meaningful experience and are willing to prepare.

What is the group size?

Groups are intentionally small. This allows for personalized support, flexible pacing, stronger group connection, and a quieter experience on the trail. You’ll never feel like you’re part of a crowd or being rushed to keep up with a large group. In the summer months, the groups tend to be a bit larger, but additional guides will be part of those groups so that you will always receive personal attention and you won’t be just a number.

Will I have to carry all my gear?

Heck no! Pack animals carry the majority of the group’s gear and your main duffel. You’ll hike with a daypack containing essentials like water, snacks, layers, and personal items. This makes the trek far more comfortable and accessible.

What kind of accommodations are used on the trek?

Accommodations vary by night and range from comfortable hotels in cities to well-established trekking camps and even island homestays. We prioritize cleanliness, warmth, and comfort whenever possible, while still preserving the authentic experience of trekking through the Andes. This balance allows you to feel well cared for without losing the sense of adventure.

What’s the food like on the trek?

Meals are prepared by a dedicated local trail chefs and are hearty, nourishing, and designed to support hiking at altitude. Special dietary needs can often be accommodated with advance notice. Many guests are pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of food on the trail, so much so that the trail chefs released a cookbook because of the demand from trekkers.

How much preparation should I do before the trip?

We provide clear preparation guidance well in advance, including fitness suggestions, training plans (if requested), packing lists, and all logistics. Most guests prepare by walking or hiking regularly, adding hills or stairs, and building endurance gradually. You don’t need extreme training — consistency matters more.

What kind of support do you provide before the trip?

Extensive support. You’ll receive detailed pre-trip information, packing guidance, training suggestions, and access to real humans who can answer questions. We specialize in making sure guests feel prepared and confident before they ever leave home.

How do you handle altitude?

Altitude is taken very seriously. Our itineraries are built with acclimatization days, conservative pacing, and experienced guides trained to recognize and respond to altitude symptoms. We also provide detailed guidance before the trip on preparation, hydration, and what to expect so there are no surprises.

What happens if I need to stop or take a slower pace?

That’s okay! Hobnail guides manage the group so no one feels pressured or left out. There are frequent rest stops, and the support team is there to help if adjustments are needed. The goal is a safe, positive experience — not how fast you reach your destination.

What if I can’t do Rainbow Mountain?

No worries. Rainbow Mountain is an optional (but really cool!) hike that involves an early start and a higher altitude. We included it for those who want the experience, but your guide will help you make an informed decision based on how you’re feeling.

What happens if my trek is not confirmed?

If the minimum number for the trek you booked is not reached before the booking deadline, you will be eligible for either a refund or to transfer your deposit to another trek. See details HERE.

Hobbit house lodges on the Salkantay Trek, Peru.

About the lodging

Once on trek, your lodging will be a combination of tent camping, comfortable hotels, family homestays, and, if you choose the Salkantay trek, one night each in the glass cabanas, Hobbit houses (pictured here), and sky domes. Tents are built for four people, but will only house a maximum of two, so there is plenty of room. Hobnail trekkers will be provided with a 3″ air mattress, along with a small pillow. Each campsite also has a clean, portable toilet tent that is removed after each group leaves to lessen the footprint on the landscape.

About the food

There is nothing comparable to what your chefs do on the mountainside. They will prepare amazing meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, often starting with a nutritious soup and mostly serving them family style. There will always be a protein, salad, assorted sides, and even mouth-watering desserts. They will cater to all food restrictions and make sure everyone has enough to make it up the mountain. Please make sure to let us know about any food restrictions when you book your trek.
