If you’ve ever looked at the price of an overseas trekking adventure and thought, “Why the heck does it cost that much?”, you’re not alone. We get it and we’ve had the exact same reactions ourselves, so I want to address that today. Booking a multi-day guided trek is an investment, and we want you to know what you’re paying for — and why it’s worth it. Here are six of the main things that account for the price of a Hobnail trek.

1. Expert Local Guides & Support Staff

One of the biggest reasons for the cost of an overseas trek is the people who make it possible. Unless otherwise noted as a self-guided trek, our trips are fully guided by professional, highly experienced local guides who not only lead the way but also ensure your safety, provide cultural insights, and enhance your experience. In addition to guides, we also employ porters, cooks, and support staff to make your trek as seamless as possible. These hardworking individuals are paid fairly, ensuring ethical and sustainable employment in the trekking industry.

2. Permits & Entry Fees

Many of the world’s top trekking destinations require permits, conservation fees, or national park entry fees. These costs vary depending on the country and trek but are essential for maintaining the trails, preserving the environment, and supporting local communities. For example, treks in Nepal require TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) permits and national park fees, while a trek through Peru’s Inca Trail includes a government-mandated permit to limit foot traffic and protect the historic site. All of this stuff is rolled into the final cost.

3. Accommodations & Meals

With the exception of some tent-camping in Peru and Patagonia, our treks feature comfortable accommodations that range from family-run teahouses and lodges to 3-4 star hotels, ensuring that you have a clean and welcoming place to rest after a long day on the trail. Meals are also a significant part of the cost, and on some treks (like the Inca Trail or Peruvian Odyssey), we provide nutritious, high-quality meals prepared by professional chefs or local cooks, giving you a taste of the regional cuisine while fueling you for the journey ahead. On other adventures that don’t include trail cooking, your meals in restaurants and lodges are covered in the trek price unless otherwise specified.

4. Transportation & Logistics

From the moment you arrive at your destination, we handle the logistics. This includes airport transfers, private vehicle transportation between trailheads and accommodations, and even internal flights if necessary. In remote areas, arranging reliable transportation isn’t easy, but we ensure everything runs smoothly so you can focus on the experience.

5. Safety & Emergency Preparedness

Trekking in remote regions comes with risks, and we take safety seriously. Our trips include emergency response plans, satellite communication devices, and medically trained guides. We also require participants to carry travel insurance, ensuring peace of mind in case of unexpected incidents.

6. Pre-Departure Expertise & Support

The Hobnail Trekking experience starts long before you take your first step on the trail. We provide comprehensive pre-departure support to ensure you’re fully prepared and confident before your trek begins. This includes:

  • Detailed gear lists so you know exactly what to pack.
  • Video chats with your guide to discuss the itinerary and get expert advice. We usually do these a month or two in advance of departure.
  • A welcome box with branded apparel so you can represent Hobnail in style. Trust me, your Hobnail hiking shirt will become your new favorite.
  • A custom mobile app containing your itinerary, travel documents, and training tips. Obviously, this will also come in super handy during the trek itself.
  • Easy access to myself and my wife (and co-owner), Holly. We are almost always available to answer your questions and provide guidance.
