I’m writing you tonight (Aug. 14, 2024) via a most wonderful thing: my MacBook laptop featuring a brand-new keyboard, touchpad, and battery. In some kind of miracle of nature, I dropped the laptop off at the Apple Genius Bar in Nashville last Saturday, and it was sent off to Apple, repaired, and returned to me by today, Wednesday. Kiiinnnd of unbelievable, don’t you think?

In the three years since I bought this thing, I have used it to write dozens of blogs, nearly 100 magazine stories, zillions of social media posts, and a full-length novel. I’ve also built the current Hobnail website, created a bunch of ads, edited countless videos and photographs, and written an email to you (if you’re on our mailing list) almost every week — all on this computer.

I quite literally wore out the keyboard. Banging away for three years, I typed it into smithereens. And now, because it has been reborn with a smattering of old and new parts, I’m going to christen it with a new name: FrankenMac®.

Here’s the infamous FrankenMac® creating this very post!

This post is the very first thing I’m writing on FrankenMac®, so I thought it appropriate that I write something from the heart, so here goes…

I’d like to direct this especially to you if you’ve been receiving our emails, following our social, attending our events, and watching our videos for several years — say, more than 3 — but have never gone on a trek. Is that you? You know who you are. (If you have gone on a trek, you can stop reading this now and go enjoy a nice beverage or something.)

So, my question to you, Non-Trekking Passive Post Reader, is …

What the %&# are you waiting for?? (That’s keyboard symbol cursing, so it doesn’t really count.)

I don’t know much, but I know a certain truth of life — it ain’t guaranteed. As much as we like to think we do, none of us knows how long we have on this earth, or how long our body will allow us to do physical things. Don’t take your fitness and (relative) youth for granted! Stop reading about epic things and go experience them yourself! Sure, it takes money and time, but those are simply details that can be overcome with a little planning and willpower. The time will never, ever, EVER be perfect to do an overseas adventure; do it anyway. Adventure travel makes life rich, exciting, thrilling, and worth living. It sets a wonderful example for your children and your friends. It creates a wealth of memories and stories that will live with you forever. It is worth whatever hassle it requires, times 100.

Remember what Red (Morgan Freeman) said as he was deciding to make the trip to Mexico to join his friend, Andy Dufrense, at the end of “The Shawshank Redemption”?

“Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’. That’s ***damn right.”

Okay, that’s my pushy speech for tonight, brought to you by FrankenMac®. I hope it inspires you to get busy living.
