Our newest itinerary into the wilds of the Balkan’s hidden treasure, Montenegro, offers an unmatched trekking and cultural experience within the country’s three spectacular national parks — Durmitor, Biogradska Gora, and Prokletije — and even a day of rafting on the Tara River!
Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will stun you with its rugged beauty and dramatic landscapes. The Park is characterized by diversified ecosystems and numerous endemic species, as well as the some of the highest peaks of the Dinaric mountains. It also boasts Tara River Canyon, which was proclaimed a world ecological reserve, and 18 glacial lakes known as “the mountain eyes,” including the amazing Black Lake. From challenging mountain trails, serene lakeside strolls, and even a day of whitewater rafting on the Tara River, your experience in Durmitor will provide adventure at every turn.
Biogradska Gora National Park, one of Europe’s last virgin forests, is an oasis of tranquility. In 1878 — only six years after Yellowstone was declared the first national park in America — Prince Nikola I Petrovic put Biogradska Gora under state protection. Due to its immense natural wealth and its many years of preservation, Biogradska Gora National Park has been proclaimed a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site. You will hike through ancient woodlands dominated by centuries-old beech, fir, and pine trees, follow the pristine Biogradsko Lake trail, and encounter rare flora and fauna that thrive in this untouched ecosystem.
The untamed wilderness of Prokletije National Park, known as the “Accursed Mountains,” is Montenegro’s most dramatic hiking destination. You will raverse dramatic peaks, hidden valleys, and alpine meadows adorned with sprays of wildflowers. You’ll trek along ancient shepherd trails, encounter traditional mountain villages, and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of this remote region. Prokletije offers a truly off-the-beaten-path trekking experience for those seeking adventure and discovery.
Every day of this trek will offer immersion into the friendly and welcoming culture of the Balkans. Montenegro’s mountain people, known for their resilience and strong sense of community, embody a rich and vibrant culture shaped by centuries of living in harmony with the rugged landscapes of the Balkans. These rugged highlanders, often referred to as “Montenegrin Highlanders” or “Montenegrin Mountain Tribes,” maintain deep-rooted traditions and customs passed down through generations. Renowned for their hospitality, they welcome visitors with open arms, eager to share their traditional music, dance, and hearty cuisine. Their way of life is characterized by a deep connection to nature, with a reverence for the mountains and a reliance on traditional practices such as sheep herding, farming, and crafts like weaving and woodworking.
Whether you’re an experienced mountaineer or a leisurely hiker, our Three-Jewel Odyssey offers a diverse range of trekking experiences to suit every trekker. Discover the true essence of adventure in the heart of the Balkans.

OK, here’s where we get serious. Hobnail requires that all trekkers purchase travel/medical insurance that covers them properly for all trekking activities.
There are a lot more details you need to know about travel insurance than we want to put in this limited space — including stuff about trip cancellations and what company we recommend — so when you’re ready, pop over to our Travel Insurance page.
We consider our treks to be adventures, not vacations. We’re not Hobnail Vacation Company, after all! Don’t get us wrong; we like vacations as much as the next person, but with our treks, you need to be physically and mentally ready. Here’s what we ask of you:
- You thoroughly read all the information we send you prior to departure.
- You get yourself an accountability partner and train properly. This doesn’t mean doing a few squats two weeks before departure.
- You familiarize yourself with your gear prior to leaving. Practice adjusting your backpack, filtering water if necessary, etc.
- If you purchase new boots, they are broken in well in advance of departure.
- When on trek, you FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF YOUR GUIDE. His or her only concern is helping you achieve your goal safely and in good health, but this won’t happen unless you follow their advice. This includes – but is not limited to – food recommendations, speed of pace, when to sleep and when not to, when to walk and when to rest, when to turn around due to illness, etc.
- When on trek, you treat your guide and the locals you encounter with the utmost respect. We are guests in their country and very grateful to be there.
All of these things may seem like common sense — and they are — but we feel that we must mention them. Hobnail’s goal is to provide you with the best experience possible, and you have an important role in achieving that goal.
A few days after registering for a trek (with at least a $500 deposit), we will give you a call (if you’re available) to say hello and answer any initial questions you may have. If you have a Facebook presence, we will also invite you to join a private group page just for your trek. This is a great way to interact with your fellow trekkers, and possibly your guide, before departure. You can post questions in the group anytime you’d like, talk about the cool gear you’re planning to take with you, organize group hikes if you live near each other, and generally just get to know those who will be sharing this incredible experience with you.
Within the first weeks after your trek is confirmed, you will receive a Welcome Box from us. It contains stuff that you can use during training as well as on the trek itself, and some other just fun things to get you (even more) excited about your trip.
You’ll also receive a login to our Hobnail app, which is full of great information including a day-by-day schedule, nearby points of interest, beautiful photography, and yet another way to contact us – through its messaging service. As your trip gets closer, we will load your flights and other more specific information into the app so you’ll feel even more secure in knowing where you’ll be staying and even how to get around the airports you’ll travel through.
The closer you get to your trek, the more you’ll hear from us — but of course, you can reach out any time you have a question.
What happens if my trek is not confirmed?
If the minimum number for the trek you booked is not reached before the 60-day booking deadline, you will be eligible for either a refund or to transfer your deposit to another trek. See details HERE.
Our Mobile App
When you book, we send you the login credentials to your own, customized app. By departure, your app will contain your flight info, passport, travel insurance docs, and COVID info, as well as your full itinerary, points of interest, and other amazing stuff.
TREK ITINERARY
Day 1: Welcome to Montenegro!
Starting now, the only thing you have to worry about is enjoying the adventure.
A Hobnail representative will meet you at luggage claim to help you with your bags and escort you to the air-conditioned van that will provide your private transfer. Your ultimate destination for today is Zabljak – but first, you’ll visit the incredible Orthodox Christian Monastery Ostrog.
About 40 km (25 miles) from Podgorica, this remarkable religious site is dramatically nestled in a nearly vertical mountain cliff. Not only a sacred sanctuary, the monastery offers breathtaking views.
From there, you’ll continue for approximately two hours through the beautiful Montenegrin landscape until you reach the town of Zabljak. Nestled in the heart of the Durmitor region and situated within Durmitor National Park, Zabljak is the highest town in the Balkans at an elevation of 1,450m (4,755 ft). Its unique location at the foot of Mt. Durmitor is complemented by 22 surrounding mountain peaks exceeding 2,200 meters (7,215 ft), 18 magnificent mountain lakes, and the awe-inspiring Tara Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe.
After you’ve settled into your hotel and had a moment to refresh, you’ll embark on a tranquil walking tour around the beautiful Black Lake. This stunning natural gem is the largest and most well-known of Durmitor’s 18 glacial lakes. You’ll follow a scenic 3-mile trail around the lake — a must-do experience for any visitor. The lake’s breathtaking beauty is accentuated by a dense coniferous forest backdrop and the protective silhouette of Mount ‘Bear’ looming behind it.
After soaking up the serene atmosphere of Black Lake, we’ll return to Zabljak.
This evening, you’ll have the opportunity to taste the rich flavors of traditional Montenegrin cuisine in this quaint mountain resort town. Sample regional specialties like a typical shepherd’s dinner and Vranac, a local red wine with a unique Mediterranean character. A peaceful night’s rest in Zabljak rounds off the day, setting the stage for the exciting adventure that awaits.
Difficulty Level: Easy
Hike Details: 3 miles, ▲ 445 ft ascent, ▼ 445 ft descent, 1-1.5 hours

Day 2: HIKE TO CRVENA GREDA (“RED ROCK”) PEAK (2,175 m/7,135 ft)
Following a good night’s rest and a hearty breakfast, you’ll be ready for today’s exhilarating schedule. You’ll start with a short, scenic drive (about 20 minutes) through lush forests to the foot of the striking Crvena Greda, or “Red Rock,” massif. This table mountain is renowned not just for its natural beauty and breathtaking panoramas, but also for the multitude of picturesque lakes gracing its surroundings.
Starting from the base (1,750 m/5,740 ft), the trail winds gently upwards towards the visible crest of Red Rock, meandering through meadows, clearings, and patches of sparse pine forest. The ground beneath is like a vibrant carpet adorned with an array of flowers and wild plants that enhance the impressive scenery.
As you approach the base of Red Rock’s ascent, your trail bifurcates. The path on the left leads downhill (80 m/260 ft) to Jablan Lake (1,791 m/5,875 ft). (It’s just a 10-minute stroll from where you stand, so you’ll have time for both.) Opting for the path on the right puts you on a clearly marked trail heading towards Red Rock’s peak. Over the next 2–2.5 km (1.25 – 1.5 mi), your semi-circular path skirts the edges of Red Rock, winding through pine woods and gently sloping uphill for incredible views of Jablan Lake. From here, you’ll also catch sight of the distinctively shaped ”Black Lake.”
Crno Jezero, or “Black Lake,” is a glacial lake that appears black at times due to the shadows of the surrounding pine forests (the water is actually a beautiful deep blue). Legend has it that long ago, Saint Sava was visiting a monastery in the area. The monks who lived in the monastery had doubts about whether Sava was really a saint, so they tested him. Their test angered Saint Sava (who was indeed really a saint), and he cursed the lands of the monastery, saying, “I pray that the land will break under this monastery and it will no longer be called a village, but it shall become the Black Lake.” Then the ground broke open and swallowed the monastery and the lake was created in its place. Whether you believe this legend or not, this lake is truly a magical place.
Continuing on the trail as we approach the peak, Red Rock’s orientation shifts towards the Durmitor massif, revealing some of the most spectacular views of Mount Bear and the Durmitor region, including the towering peak of Bobotov Kuk. At 2,523 m/8,278 ft, Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak in the Durmitor mountain range and once thought to be the highest in Montenegro. (They’ve since determined that there are three mountains higher than Bobotov Kuk; you can see these on our Peaks of the Balkans trek.)
But wait! You haven’t seen the Black Lake up close yet — but you’re about to! Following the trail down to the lake, you’ll be enchanted by the tranquility of the lake juxtaposed against the fragrant pine forests and rugged peaks that surround it. You’ll take a break here, soaking up the natural beauty and serenity after a long and relatively tough day of hiking.
When you’re ready, you’ll return to Zabljak where you’ll enjoy another restful night of sleep in anticipation of another adventurous day ahead.

Day 3: HIKE TO PRUTAS PEAK (2,393 m/7,850 ft)
Today, you’ll see the very best landscapes of Durmitor National Park, so have your camera handy.
Your hike takes you to Prutas, a peak renowned for its unique, rod-shaped rock formations that give it its name (“mountain of rods” in English). We can promise you’ve never seen a mountain that looks like this before!
The trail to Prutas is an aesthetic treat, combining the beauty of deep green slopes and arresting views of the lakes below. On the way, you’ll also get to see the incredible peaks of Djevojka (2,440 m/8,005 ft), Bezimeni Vrh (2,487 m/8,160 ft), and Bobotov Kuk (2,525 m/8,284 ft). As you descend to the western plateau beneath the summit of Prutas, a breathtaking panorama of the Susica River gorge and Skrcka Lakes unfolds.
Your hike starts in Sarban/Dobri Do (1,707 m/5,600 ft), and over the course of approximately 3-3.5 hours, you will ascend 700 m/2,295 ft via a 4-km/15-mile trail to reach the grassy plateau of the magnificent Prutas peak. This southern route through the Skrcko Zdrijelo pass (2,114 m/6,935 ft) offers the most accessible and rewarding path to Prutas. With its gentle ridgelines, verdant mountainsides, striking “rod” layers, vertical cliffs, and limestone rock formations, this trail truly brings the magic of Durmitor National Park to life. The summit is a spacious, grass-covered plateau offering remarkable 360-degree views. That camera you brought? Here’s where you’ll need it most! This is your opportunity to immortalize the majesty of this Montenegrin landscape. After reaching the top, you’ll have time to rest and immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings. Today’s hike, promising unforgettable views and an exceptional experience, is set to be the highlight of your Montenegrin adventure.

Day 4: WHITEWATER RAFTING ON THE TARA RIVER
Kickstart your day with an energizing breakfast in Zabljak before hopping into the van for a short, 15-minute drive towards Devil’s Lake (known as the birthplace of winged horses) and Fish Lake (aptly named because it’s full of fish). Along the way, you’ll encounter the enchanting stone tomb monuments known as “stećci.” Dating from the 12th to 16th centuries, these cultural landmarks have held a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage list since 2016 for their historical importance, and they’ll hold a spot in your memories for their absolute charm and fascination.
Continuing in the van for another 20 minutes or so, you’ll arrive at the legendary Tara River. An essential part of any visit to Durmitor National Park is undoubtedly a rafting adventure on this river, and we wouldn’t want you to miss out on any of the essentials!
The Tara River Canyon, peaking at a depth of 1,300 m (4,300 ft), is Europe’s deepest and second only to our very own Grand Canyon as the world’s deepest. The canyon covers 80 km (50 miles) of the river’s 158 km (98 mile) length and is part of the UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park, recognized for its rich habitat and diverse species.
Rafting offers an unrivaled, exhilarating way to explore the Tara Canyon. Marvel at the crystalline water, cascading waterfalls (you won’t be going over, don’t worry), and thrilling rapids that, while might appear daunting, are completely manageable for novices under the guidance of an experienced skipper. The rafting offered is typically a class 2+, sometimes class 3, depending on the season and rainfall.
Your rafting tour starts from Splaviste, near the tourist center of Zabljak and the famous Djurdjevica Tara Bridge. Lucky you, you’ll actually be rafting under this historic bridge as well as past the Ljutica River, Europe’s shortest. The bridge, completed in 1940, was Europe’s largest vehicular concrete arch bridge at 172 m/565 ft when it was constructed.
After rafting, those with a love for adrenaline (it’s you we’re talking about) can experience Europe’s longest zipline, soaring over the Tara River next to the stunning Tara Bridge. To recharge, you’ll enjoy a traditional Montenegrin meal with mountain cheese, fish, and fresh salad for lunch.
After you’re full of delicious local fare, you’ll climb back aboard the comfortable van for a journey to Biogradska Gora National Park, about an hour’s drive away. The last part of the drive, through untouched rainforest, is itself an adventure before reaching your destination — the mesmerizing Biogradsko Lake. Sitting at an elevation of 1,099 meters (3,605 ft) within the heart of the National Park and surrounded by a lush forest, this tranquil setting is sure to leave a lasting impression. You may have to be dragged away from the tranquility of the lake, but it’ll be time to go. You’ll end the day’s adventure by heading to Kolasin where your room awaits.
Rafting grade: II-III, 2.5-3 h
Hike Details: 3 miles, ▲ 500 ft ascent, ▼ 500 ft descent, 1-2 hours
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Kolasin
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 5: ASCENDING TO THE SUMMIT OF KOM VASOJEVICKI (2,460 m/8,070 ft)
You’ll start your day with another awesome breakfast before departing for Stavna village, nestled at an altitude of 1,650 m (5,415 ft). This humble hamlet lies in the shadow of the majestic Komovi massif, and it is here where our journey to the summit of Kom Vasojevicki begins.
The Komovi Mountain, rising almost to a staggering 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), stands as a stunning giant in the southeastern part of Montenegro. Despite its relatively small footprint, its towering heights and breathtaking vistas have led many to regard Komovi as the most beautiful mountain in Montenegro. Let’s see if you agree.
Once you arrive at Stavna’s expansive plateau, you can’t help but be immediately captivated by Kom Vasojevicki. This awe-inspiring peak lures us with its lofty promise of unforgettable panoramas. Our trek begins from Stavna, meandering through a mix of grassy and rocky terrains, nestled below the rocky massif on the northern side. After approximately 2.5 hours of ascent, we find ourselves at the magnificent Vera Pass (2,200 m/7,215 ft).
The vantage point from here offers breathtaking views of the bordering Albanian mountains, most notably the Prokletije mountain range (also known as the Accursed Mountains, a place you’ll wander in our Peaks of the Balkans trek). The highest peak, Maja Jezerce (2,694 m/8,840 ft), stands as a regal sentinel over the wider area.
From Vera Pass, you’ll press on towards the summit. It won’t be long before you’re relishing in the privilege of the unrivaled view from the peak of Kom Vasojevicki. Wow. Just wow.
The journey back to Stavna village will retrace your steps, each one filled with the satisfaction of your ascent.
As the day winds down, you’ll make your way to the charming town of Plav, a 45 km (28 mile) drive that will last about an hour. Here, you’ll nourish your body with a well-deserved dinner before settling in for a restful overnight stay. Today was a perfect blend of hiking challenges and scenic rewards, a true reflection of Montenegro’s enchanting wilderness.
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult
Hike Details: 5 miles, ▲ 2200 ft ascent, ▼ 2200 ft descent, 6-7 hours
Accommodation: Guesthouse or Ethno Village (wooden cabins) in Gusinje
Meals Included: Breakfast, Packed Lunch
Day 6: GREBAJA VALLEY, WEDGED BETWEEN THE TOWERS OF THE KARANFILI PEAKS
After a dreamy breakfast this morning, you’ll begin your day with a brief (15-20 minute) transfer to the remarkable Grebaja Valley. Framed by the towering karst spires of the Karanfili (2,461 m/8,075 ft)), the Grebaja Valley presents an imposing spectacle that many regard as one of the most striking in the Balkans. Its U-shaped form, ensconced by sharp, towering peaks, gives the impression of a titanic wolf’s jaw forged by the surrounding landscapes. For those with a deep affinity for outdoor pursuits, Grebaja Valley is a veritable paradise and a must-visit spot when hiking in Montenegro.
Today’s hike begins with a steady ascent through a shaded beech forest, culminating in a challenging uphill climb to the twin summits of Popadija and Talijanka (2,056 m/6,745 ft). The view from these summits is genuinely breathtaking, beginning with the proximal Karanfili peaks and extending to the expansive Prokletije massif (the “Albanian Alps”). The panorama encompasses the highest summits while also sweeping down to the magnificent Grebaja Valley. From this vantage point, the rugged peaks across the valley appear almost within arm’s reach, and your eye wanders across the border between Montenegro and Albania, penetrating the heart of Albania’s Kelmend region.
Your journey continues along a ridge that winds back down, presenting gorgeous views of the jagged Karanfili Mountains, aptly dubbed the “Dolomites of Montenegro.”
After a day filled with adventure and discovery, you’ll happily retire to a charming restaurant nestled on the valley floor, where you’ll commemorate your journey over a delightful dinner (on your own) with your fellow trekkers.
At last, you’ll return to your accommodation for a well-deserved night of rest, with the echoes of the day’s escapades lulling you to sleep. Sweet dreams, indeed.
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult
Hike Details: 7 miles, ▲ 3100 ft ascent, ▼ 3100 ft descent, 6-7 hours
Accommodation: Guesthouse/Ethno Village (wooden cabins) in Gusinje
Meals Included: Breakfast, Packed Lunch
Day 7: UNTAMED WILDERNESS: EXPLORING THE HIDDEN WONDERS OF ROPOJANA VALLEY
Fuel up on breakfast as today is a long day — but oh, so worth it! After you eat, you’ll pack only essential items in your backpack, as the rest of your luggage will be transported and received at Podgorica Airport on the last day. (This is due to the lack of a connecting automobile road between Ropojana and Theth Valley.)
A short transfer will bring you to the village of Vusanje (in Albania, it’s called Vuthaj), where you’ll start trekking up the Ropojana Valley. This valley was formed long ago by a glacier that was more than 16 miles long!
The Ropojana Valley belongs at the top of the list of natural beauties in the region of Plav and Gusinje and is an experience in which everyone should indulge. Besides, without a visit to Ropojana, our time in this incredible region on the northern side of Prokletije would not be complete. The Ropojana Valley is a spectacularly beautiful place — jagged limestone peaks, rolling green pastures, high passes, and beech tree forests — the elements of a perfect postcard picture.
Along the way, you’ll stop at a pupil-shaped karst spring called “Sava’s (Skakavica) Eye” where an ice-cold river is born from melting snow high up in the mountains. The mountain-framed corridor takes you past a dry lake, shepherd huts, and an abandoned military post, straight into the heart of the Albanian Alps. A weathered borderstone is the only reminder of the once tightly sealed borders of former Communist Albania.
The trail is flanked by the spectacular Karanfili massif on the right and Maja Jezerces — the highest summit of the Dinaric Alps — on the left.
Continuing on, you’ll come to the foot of Mt. Arapi (2,217 m/7,275 ft), a canine tooth-shaped peak that stands high above Theth National Park, forming the largest big wall in the Balkans. Arriving at Peja Pass (1,711 m/5,615 ft), you’ll stop for a picnic lunch with a fantastic view of the beautiful valley of Theth surrounded by an incredible panorama.
After lunch, you’ll retrace your steps along the same path, descending a well-trodden caravan trail that passes a small lake where you’ll be happy to take a brief scenic rest. You’ll relish hiking through the incredible limestone peaks that surround you and will continue to serve as your guardrails during the short minivan transfer to your accommodation in the heart of the lively village of Vusanje.
There, you’ll reminisce about all of your adventures here in Montenegro while devouring a final dinner (included) with your fellow trekkers and guides.
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult
Hike Details: 7 miles, ▲ 1800 ft ascent, ▼ 1800 ft descent, 6-7 hours
Accommodation: Guesthouse in Vusanje
Meals Included: Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner
Day 8: Departure

GENERAL INFORMATION
About Montenegro
Boasting one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in all of Europe, as well as some of the continent’s wildest and most beautiful mountains, tiny Montenegro is likely to surprise most visitors’ expectations.
Only about 186 miles (300 km) long, its stunning Adriatic coastline is liberally sprinkled with historic towns, lively beach resorts, secluded coves, and comely white-stone fishing villages, all punctuated by strips of fine sand and pebble beaches. The interior meanwhile displays an outstanding array of snow-dusted peaks, crystal-clear lakes and rivers, and deep forests and canyons. The whole adds up to a diverse landscape quite extraordinary for such a small country.
The legendary English romantic poet Lord Byron once described the country this way: “At the birth of the planet, the most beautiful encounter between land and sea must have been on the Montenegrin coast.” This is a testament to the country’s striking beauty, which is no doubt one of the primary reasons why it attracts millions of visitors.
Montenegro was recognized as the 27th independent state in the world by the Berlin Congress, which occurred on July 13, 1878. For much of the 20th century, Montenegro was a part of Yugoslavia, and from 2003 to 2006, it was a component of the federated union of Serbia and Montenegro. Montenegro gained full independence in June 2006.
