Let’s face it — for most people, packing stinks. Packing incorrectly stinks even more. There’s nothing more frustrating than beginning a 10-day overseas adventure by realizing you didn’t bring what you needed or you brought too much stuff you didn’t need.

But that doesn’t have to be the case.

Whether you’re heading to the Himalayas, Mt. Kilimanjaro, or the Ecuadorian Andes, smart packing means more comfort, less stress, and a whole lot more fun.

To that end, here are Hobnail’s top 11 packing hacks to get you trail-ready. Some are about how to pack; others are about what to pack.

1. Pack by category, not by day
Instead of packing “Monday’s outfit” and “Tuesday’s outfit,” sort gear by category — tops, bottoms, socks, layers. This makes it easier to mix and match, and reduces bulk.

2. Go with the ‘three outfit rule’
Even for a 10–14 day trip, three sets of clothes is usually plenty: one for hiking, one for relaxing at the lodge, and one spare. With quick-dry fabrics and access to occasional laundry, you’ll be covered without overpacking. Bonus tip: choose low-odor, multiple-day use fabrics like Merino wool and other technical blends — they breathe well, resist odor, and dry fast. Cotton stuff is only for the lodge, not for hiking.

3. Use packing cubes (but don’t overstuff them)
Packing cubes keep your gear organized, but resist the urge to cram them full. Looser cubes compress better and are easier to sort through. If you’re not familiar with packing cubes, here’s what they look like.

4. Bring lightweight camp shoes
After a long day on the trail, your feet will thank you for a break. Lightweight slides or sneakers give your boots time to dry out and your toes time to breathe.

5. Roll, don’t fold
Rolling your clothes not only saves space but reduces wrinkles. It also makes them easier to grab without messing up your whole bag.

6. Create a ‘grab-and-go’ essentials pouch
Keep items like your passport, headlamp, lip balm, chargers, and medicine in one small pouch. For long, overseas flights, keep healthy snacks in there, too.

7. Include a compact first-aid kit
Even though your Hobnail guide will have one, a personal kit with basics — band-aids, blister pads, ibuprofen, and any personal meds — can save the day when you’re between stops. Keep this in your backpack.

8. Layer like a pro
Think in terms of layers: moisture-wicking base, insulating mid, and a weather-proof shell. This strategy keeps you ready for anything from misty mornings to sunny summits. Again, Merino wool is king when it comes to base and mid layers.

9. Stuff socks and underwear in your shoes
Maximize space by filling your hiking boots with small soft items — plus, this helps your boots maintain their shape in transit.

10. Leave room for a few surprises
Whether it’s a handmade scarf from Peru or a Nepalese yak bell, leave a little space in your suitcase for meaningful souvenirs.

11. Pack a small stash of duct tape
Wrap a few feet around your Nalgene water bottle. (Gotta be a Nalgene, by the way.) From gear repairs to blister prevention, it’s the Swiss Army knife of packing hacks.

Bonus tip: Lay everything out before packing it — and then remove at least three things. You won’t miss them. And if you do, you can probably purchase them in your destination country.
