If the idea of traveling overseas makes your palms sweat, you’re not alone. Many of our Hobnail guests tell us they were nervous β€” even downright intimidated β€” the first time they considered an international trek. And who can blame them? Between foreign languages, unfamiliar airports, and the fear of “what if something goes wrong,” it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

But here’s the good news: that’s exactly why Hobnail Trekking Co. exists.

We don’t just drop you in a foreign country and wish you luck. We guide you, personally and practically, every step of the way. From your very first email to the final flight home, we’re here to make international travel feel not just doable β€” but deeply rewarding.

Real people, real support

Mark and Holly Johnson, Hobnail’s founders and owners, personally curate and oversee every trek on our calendar. Every Hobnail itinerary has been experienced by Mark, Holly, and/or other Hobnail staff β€” people who know the routes, the partners, and the details inside and out.

And Mark and Holly aren’t hidden behind a customer service wall. They’re almost always available for a phone call to walk you through the details, help you choose a destination, or just reassure you that yes, you really can do this.

Local guides you can trust

Every Hobnail trek is led by a seasoned, English-speaking guide who lives in the region you’re exploring. These aren’t gig workers pulled off an app β€” they’re career professionals with deep local knowledge and a heart for hospitality. They’ve been thoroughly vetted, trained, and tested. In most cases, we’ve known them personally for years.

That means you’re never left guessing what’s safe, what’s respectful, or what’s next. Our guides handle the logistics, the language, and the cultural details β€” so you can focus on the trail ahead.

Knowledge = comfort

For most people, the more they know about what to expect on their upcoming trip, the better. That’s why we hook you up with as much information as possible β€” both between booking and departure, and during the trip itself. This starts with the trek page on our website and continues with post-booking goodies, gear lists, your custom mobile app, and a pre-trip video chat with your guide and fellow trekkers. (Plus, you can always pick up the phone and call us.)

Bottom line? You’ll arrive at your destination feeling informed and excited, not anxious.

We only go where it’s safe

At Hobnail, we take safety seriously β€” not just on the trail, but in choosing where we go. We will never run trips in regions deemed unsafe or unstable for tourism. Yes, there are inherent risks in traveling anywhere β€” even at home β€” but our itineraries are based in regions that are considered safe, well-supported, and welcoming to travelers. If a destination’s situation ever changes, we’ll reroute, postpone, or cancel before putting our guests at risk.Β

It’s all about flexibility

Let’s face it: things happen. Flights get delayed. Weather changes. A suitcase goes missing. At Hobnail, we plan for the unplanned. Our itineraries include smart buffer days and flexible ground support. And because we require every guest to carry travel insurance, you’ve got coverage in place should the unexpected occur.

You’re not alone

It’s easy to look at the photos and think, β€œThat’s for people braver than me.” But the truth? Most Hobnail trekkers are just like you β€” thoughtful, responsible people (often from small towns or tight-knit communities) who decided to take the leap with a company they could trust.

We’ve helped dozens of first-time international travelers discover the joy of standing atop a mountain in Italy, walking through the quiet valleys of Albania, or watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu. It’s not about being fearless β€” it’s about being prepared, supported, and inspired.

So if your heart says β€œGo” but your nerves say β€œMaybe not,” take a deep breath. Hobnail was made for you.

Let’s start planning your first international adventure β€” together.
